How to reduce energy consumption in your company?

A steady increase in electricity prices combined with the discontinuation of the home office solution can result in large expenses for your company. Here you will find good tips on how to reduce electricity costs and energy consumption, without compromising comfort and efficiency in the workplace.

In recent months, several private individuals have taken steps to reduce energy consumption in their homes. As a business, you do not have the same opportunity to schedule your consumption during the hours with the lowest electricity costs, and at the same time, we see that the grid rent – together with the power link towards businesses – causes high total electricity costs.

However, there are several ways to save energy consumption for your business, and here we will go through some of the easiest ways you can reduce your electricity bill next month.

Energy measurement system – get an overview of peaks and reduce the power consumption

In some periods electricity costs more, and in some periods we use more electricity than others. If you have a system that controls your consumption, you can extract information about how this is affected by price peaks.

A steady consumption is often cheaper than those with increases and limitations. For most companies, core time is often a consumption peak, as all the employees are at work. High consumption for short periods is often called power peaks. These are exactly what you should try to prevent.

By installing a management system for your business, you will be able to easily observe times when power peaks occur. The vast majority of peaks can be avoided by being aware of the times in question.

Identify actions and activities that require more energy than others, and be aware of the times these take place. You can then investigate the possibilities of moving these, or implementing energy-saving measures during this period.

Reduction of heating outside of core hours

There is little need to have a warm office when no one is there to enjoy it. Therefore, reducing the heat at night – and on weekends and holidays – can be an easy way to reduce energy consumption, without compromising comfort during working hours.

With the exception of companies that have employees on shift schedules, everyone can benefit from turning down the heating in the premises during periods when no one is in them. Producing heat requires a lot of energy, and this consumption can easily be reduced without compromising comfort.

There are several ways you can introduce a reduction in heating, but the easiest is to set up a smart control system where you can regulate several of the energy carriers. In many older buildings, the heating can also be controlled from a central control center that the operator has access to. This can also be agreed upon, without the need for new installations.

Motion sensor for lighting

Lighting the premises is always necessary, but maybe it's not as necessary to light the meeting room after the Monday meeting is over? By installing motion sensors in all rooms, you can easily limit your energy consumption.

Several different production facilities may depend on the lights being on throughout the working day, but can still benefit from motion sensors in rooms connected to the main facility. It is not necessary to install them in every room, and you can easily get a package that suits your needs.

In larger office or manufacturing spaces, manually controlled light sources can often result in lights being left on all day, rather than being turned off when the area is not in use. This often results in large and unnecessary electricity costs, and is not least an easy way to optimize energy consumption in the building.

For housing associations and condominiums, this can be a very good idea. Staircases and common areas are something that are rarely used for a long time at a time. Lighting of these areas is often only a need if there are no sources of normal daylight, and can therefore also be regulated by a sensor that registers this and turns on when daylight disappears.

Identify areas for improvement and take action

As previously mentioned, there is much to be gained from raising awareness of both consumption and needs. It is strongly recommended to map the current situation for the company or building you manage, to get an overview of what your consumption is today.

Then it is valuable to implement energy-saving measures where possible. Perhaps you have the opportunity to install solar panels or produce and reuse some energy yourself?

A major innovation from Enova was launched at the beginning of February and will help increase awareness of sustainability and energy consumption among housing associations and condominium owners. Enova now gives housing associations and condominium owners the opportunity to receive mapping support.

Simply explained, this is a support that will help housing associations and condominiums get a comprehensive overview of possible measures that can reduce energy needs, power requirements and greenhouse gas emissions. It will also map out any opportunities for local energy production such as installing heat pumps or solar energy in the building itself.

If you would like more information about the mapping support from Enova, we have written an article about this. You can find it here!
