What is an energy certificate?

An energy performance certificate is a document that shows how energy-efficient a building is. It provides a rating based on two factors: energy rating (A–G) and heating rating (red–green). This system helps owners and managers understand a building's energy consumption and potential costs. The energy performance certificate affects the value of your building.

Energy labelling was introduced in Norway in 2010 to raise awareness about energy use and contribute to a more sustainable construction sector. Are you selling or renting out a building? Then an energy certificate is actually required.

1. Energy rating A–G

The energy rating shows how much energy the building is expected to use annually per square meter. The degree of insulation and direct/indirect heat loss are included in building physics. The energy rating in the energy labelling scheme shows how much energy a building is expected to use per square meter per year.

The higher the rating, the lower the expected energy costs.

2. Heating character

The heating rating shows how much of the energy consumption comes from renewable energy sources. This is a color scale from red to green , with green being best.

Use of biofuel, district heating, heat pump or solar energy.

Combination of heat pump, wood stove and electric heating.

Only electric heating or use of fossil fuels such as oil.

3. Energy certificate

When a building is energy-labeled, it receives an energy certificate . This not only shows the energy rating, but also provides specific suggestions for improvements. Are you selling or renting out a building? Then it is a requirement to include the energy certificate in the advertisement.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have listed the questions we are most often asked about our energy certificate. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

The energy performance certificate provides a good indication of the building's energy costs, how sustainable it is and what measures can be taken to improve energy consumption. It helps owners and tenants make informed choices.

A two-tiered grading system

The energy label consists of two parts:

  • Energy rating: How much energy the building is expected to use.
  • Heating rating: What proportion of energy comes from renewable sources?

This system makes it easy to understand how energy efficient your building is.

A building with a good energy rating will often be more attractive on the market. Customers look for energy-efficient buildings that can save them on operating costs. Therefore, a better energy rating can give you a higher rental/sale price.

Our mission is to empower businesses to reduce energy consumption and operational costs through sustainable and efficient solutions.

Yes, in many cases it can be a good idea! An energy survey and analysis gives you an overview of the most beneficial measures to implement in your building.

You can find the rating of your building by entering your details into our energy calculator .

Energy certificates are issued by professionals such as energy advisors, engineers or certified energy efficiency practitioners.

The energy certificate is valid for 10 years . If you make improvements to the building, you can update the certificate at any time.

If you are buying or renting a building, the energy certificate must be part of the advertisement. If you do not have an energy certificate, you can contact us at Energihuset and we will assist you.
